Writer-director-star Dev Patel plays an underground prizefighter whose gimmick is wearing a rubber monkey mask in this grimy revenge actioner set in India. Traumatized by the childhood memory of his mother’s murder, he hatches a plan to infiltrate the criminal organization responsible, doing menial work as a dishwasher and waiter while biding his time for the big payback. Not much distinguishes the storytelling, but the copious, bloody, and wild fight choreography rescues the movie. Though Monkey Man was actually shot in Indonesia, viewers will never know the difference, as all the filth, stench, and brownness of India splash the screen with literally-reaching-into-the-toilet-to-retrieve-the-gun panache.
