Red One, 2024 - ★★

Okay so there’s one sequence in this film that doesn’t look like total green screen dogsh*t, and it’s the one in Krampus’s mansion. Because a) it looks like it takes place in a real location (even if it’s a set, it’s a set with like real stuff in it, you know?) and b) the character designs seem entirely, or at least mostly, practical? Every other sequence—be it in the North Pole or a beach in Aruba—looks like it was cobbled together by fifteen drunks laid off from ILM a decade ago, but that Krampus sequence looks real and the reality gives it a tangible heft the rest of them film lacks. I genuinely don’t understand how you spend $200M on a movie like this and have it look like this film looks. It’s irresponsible!
