Game Over. Sorry Mario and Luigi, but much like my older sisters used to boot me off our Nintendo 64, the Guardians have arrived to kick off the summer and shove The Super Mario Bros. Movie out of the box-office high score.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 earned $118 million domestically this weekend. (Globally, it hit $282 million.) Comparatively, Vol. 3 had a stronger opening than 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy ($94.3 million), but not quite as good as 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146.5 million). Still, it outperformed February’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which only opened to the tune of $106 million, ranking Vol. 3. That makes it the 16th-best opening of all time in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe).
