The Fire Within, 1963 - ★★★★½

An ex-playboy, recovering from his alcoholism and dead-set on suicide, wanders around Paris visiting friends and ex-lovers. Something about the cinematography in this film is enchanting and there is so much depth to Alain's character. After seeing the film, it feels like I've known him for his whole life.

That being said, this is one depressing film. It's sort of like the idea of watching one's life play out before your eyes at the moment of death, except Alain relives his life for an entire day. As the film progresses, we see deeper and deeper into his sadness. Truly, there is no bottom to that well. Malle did a fantastic job with this character, a man many others would just treat as a cheap drunk.

Highly recommended!
