Kevin Costner runs a schmaltzy marathon in ‘McFarland, USA’

“Dad, tell me you took the wrong exit,” groans the teen daughter of high school coach Jim White (Kevin Costner), who’s relocating his family to the dusty migrant town of McFarland, Calif. On their inaugural drive through the tiny community, the glaringly white Whites look askance at their working-class Latino neighbors, and vice versa.

Based on a true story, “McFarland, USA” chronicles White’s creation of an award-winning track team in the town in the late 1980s, as well as his own cross-cultural awakening.
