It is indeed a wonderful life if your entire town is white european, (minus that housemaid). The character desperately wants to leave to see the world, but plenty of the film shows life in the town with a real sense of community. Progress of the plot may feel a bit slow compared to today's films. As a poor excuse you can try to pretend that's the source of the character's wanderlust. The main villain is an exploitative capitalist, but the message isn't that communism is better, it's got a little bit of third-way in it. All around, a slightly dated, slow film that will elevate your soul.
