Into the Spider-Verse was one of the biggest pleasant surprises of the past few years. Iโve liked some movies from Sony Pictures Animation, like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and The Lego Movie. But Spider-Verse single-handedly initiated a paradigm shift in the landscape of American animation. I went to that movie just because it was a superhero movie. I didnโt (and still donโt, in terms of comics) know anything about Miles Morales, and I had no idea the movie would be so visually arresting and narratively riveting. In the wake of things like Arcane and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish emulating the filmโs explosive animation style, itโll be interesting to see if Sony can pull it off again with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Grab your web shooters, and letโs go swinging!
