Bitter Sweet Nostalgia

A quiet and slow slice of life film set in the 1920s after The First World War, based off a novel of the same name published in 1980. Two former solders are set at work uncovering history in pastoral England while interacting with the inhabitances of two parishes rooted in the land where they are temporarily living. The actors, setting, script, cinematography and editing combine to imbue the film with subtleties of local religion, religious skepticism, the changing norms of culture, community and the process of experience and memory mixing together to form nostalgia for a place or a snippet of one's own life. A bit of an anti-war film and a bit of a romance film, with comedy sprinkled in, it feels like it doesn't resonate with any one genre very strongly. Full Film:
