SIX SUSPECTS (Lin Tuan-Chiu, Taiwan, 1965, 3)

The black-and-white widescreen, jazzy score and view from inside a car on a rainy night promise a noirish Otto Preminger film, but ANATOMY OF A MURDER this ainโ€™t. Heck itโ€™s not even an average KOJAK or IRONSIDE episode. Thereโ€™s a laborious setting up of a murder, giving six people a motive, that gets little confusing but still kinda removes any suspense about whoโ€™s gonna get bumped off.

Unlike Telly Savalas or Raymond Burr though, Yi Yuan, the detective who becomes the lead in the investigation half of the film, has little flavor or personality (except a hat?) and it emphasizes how much the film loses when the live-wire sleazy blackmailer played by Wai Wang gets bumped off. SIX SUSPECTS is also the kind of sloppy script where the detective...
