One game that gets praised a lot, but is just to dated to be really good is the original Doom, back in the days it was an innovative first person shooter, it had the right balance of game play, controls, action and atmosphere and defined the shooter genre for the next 5 years afterwards, its still a solid game and unlike Wolfenstein for example it still holds up. But, even though taking a trip through memory lane can be fun, compared to some of the latter games, its crude and lacks some of the depth of many of the later shooters. That said, the game did and still has a mod community and mods are always fun.
