The Haunting of Seacliff Inn, 1994 - ★★★

The first half of The Haunting of Seacliff Inn plays out as your typical Hallmark fare that focuses on the cliché minutia of a stressed yuppie-couple. You’re almost tempted to turn it off. The entire viewing experience is additionally weird because the film first aired on the Sci-Fi channel of all places (and I was reminded by the corner tag of the screen on the YouTube version I watched), where the weak ghost story is supposedly the excuse for this move. However, the reward for sticking it out to the end is not just worth your time… it has you completely rethinking your evaluation of the film as a whole. The final 30 minutes induce a well-balanced sense of tension and romance, suddenly tapping into an incredibly effective period-piece ghost story—perhaps a gothic romance that claws...
