A solid crime-drama from America's Golden Age of hard-boiled crime detectives, certainly one of the best. After a taxi-driver panics and ends up death, the local stoic and stone-faced cops discover an attempt by criminal elements to use unsuspecting tourists to smuggle heroin into the States. After spending a while following the police procedure the film shifts towards the point of view of two criminals, a murderous psychopath and his "gentlemen" teacher. Retrieving dope from innocent tourists isnt as easy as it seems and the criminals end up making a crucial mistake. A good film, with solid camera work, a good eye for the city and several good twists and turns, perhaps not all the characters are as interesting and the two main leads, but enjoyable from beginning to end.
